Their Spirits My Demons

Website: http://www.pickledegg.info/2010/10/childhood-demons-wont-ruin-life-author Blurb: What begun in Dublin, ended in Dublin...
In between was a lifetime of arguments, dodgy childminders, bullying, night terrors, cancer scares, ruined holidays, fear of an impending nuclear war, put downs by 'Sir Jimmy Savile' and alcohol misuse.
It is fair to say that alcoholism has pretty much torn my world apart. It's caused the death of so many of my family members including both of my parents that I've almost become blasé towards death....
But hey! This is no 'tragic life story'!
My camp alcoholic uncle who'd be my only real male role model whilst growing up provided me with plenty of laughs, often at his own expense, more often at the expense of myself and others. He once fell in love with a Greek donkey I kid you not.
"The way we ended up!" he'd say to you whilst holding his hand to his chest.
And what doesn't kill you can only make you stronger; well that's what I've heard anyway.....
'Their Spirits, My Demons' is a warm and humorous reminiscence of growing up in a larger than life family plagued by emotional instability, denial and escapism from life's trials and tribulations.

As a boy growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, John endured years of sexual abuse by his father, a former Baptist minister. John tried to find refuge in the regimentation of a military career and in multiple marriages, but his efforts to deal with the trauma of his experiences led him on a self-destructive path that left a trail of broken people and dreams. His life continued its downward spiral until he reached the ultimate bottom. . .and began his journey toward forgiveness of his abusers and, finally, himself. This memoir is a groundbreaking account, from a man's perspective, of the effects of sexual abuse on all aspects of the victim's life. John speaks out about the details of his abuse and the family culture that enabled generations of abusers to victimize its children. His searing openness throws a spotlight on the darkly kept secrets of childhood sexual abuse, and his story will serve as an inspiration to everyone who longs to embrace their own healing journeys.
John Mark Clubb grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, where he joined the United States Marine Corps out of high school and then went on to earn a degree in management at Eastern Kentucky University. He served as a Naval Flight Officer with Airborne Early Warning Squadron 114 before becoming an NROTC instructor with the Naval Science Unit at the University of Minnesota. He was a Naval reservist for the remainder of his career, once again serving on active duty with the Naval Reserves before retiring with VQ-11, an electronic jamming and training squadron at Naval Air Station, Brunswick, Maine. He has worked as Chief of Flight Test Engineers for a national defense contractor and is currently a commercial airline pilot. This is his first book. |

Precious Based on the novel 'Push'

this book from Amazon
This very emotive account of Precious Jones’ encounter with childhood abuse is graphic and explicit throughout but serves as a poignant example of the devastation, confusion and anger that are often consequences of abuse. Precious’ childhood is stolen before it even begins by a father who fathers her first child when she is only 12 years old, a second at 16 and a mother who condones and contributes to the abuse in unspeakable ways.
The journal like account aptly but subtly exposes the many ways in which society often fails to recognize or intervene in situations where children are at risk, even when, as in the case Precious, a child is crying out for help. It brings in consciousness the many issues that can ensue as a direct consequence of abuse such as childhood pregnancy, an interrupted education and isolation.
Although this story is filled with devastation and desolation, there is an undertone of strength, resilience and hope as Precious is able to come to a place where she recognizes she is not alone, that many others have similar stories to tell and that she can redefine her life by getting an education, becoming independent of her abusers, and taking charge of her future, despite the adversities she continues to face.
This is by no means a self help book or one with a fairytale ending. It is a provocative, and somewhat extreme account that screams “you are not alone” to anyone who has survived abuse and may feel that there experiences were unique; it gives new meaning to the term ‘survivor’ and illustrates just how complex and overarching abuse can be. |
