Tiger's Child

Torey Hayden

Buy this book

Paperback: 336 pages (2005)

Publisher: Harper Element

ISBN: 0007206976

This is a sequel to Torey's first book, "One Child" Torey is an educational psychologist and special-education teacher. In "One Child" Torey tells the story of working with a 6 year girl, Sheila, who at the time was being physically and emotionally neglected, sexually abused. Sheila was put into Torey's class by the state course as she is experiencing a range of emotional and behavioural issues.

Tiger's Child picks up the story of how Torey and Sheila were reunited when Sheila is 15. Told very much as an unfolding journey between the two, Tiger's Child picks up on repressed memories and the long reaching impacts of childhood abuse on a now troubled teenage Sheila.

Tiger's Child can be read alone or as part of a sequel with One Child, also by Torey Hayden.

Every one of us is on a unique journey. In his book "Whispers From Within" John invites us to review the journey he's been on thus far...showing us both the highs and lows, the times of great sadness and the moments of hope and love. I am inspired by the raw vulnerability expressed by John within these pages - he holds nothing back in his telling of the truth. If we allow it to, this book will challenge us to be real with our emotions and just may be the key to unlocking our own whispers from within.

Precious Based on the novel 'Push'
By Sapphire

Paperback: 192 pages (2010)

Publisher: Vintage

ISBN: 0099548720

This very emotive account of Precious Jones’ encounter with childhood abuse is graphic and explicit throughout but serves as a poignant example of the devastation, confusion and anger that are often consequences of abuse. Precious’ childhood is stolen before it even begins by a father who fathers her first child when she is only 12 years old, a second at 16 and a mother who condones and contributes to the abuse in unspeakable ways.

The journal like account aptly but subtly exposes the many ways in which society often fails to recognize or intervene in situations where children are at risk, even when, as in the case Precious, a child is crying out for help. It brings in consciousness the many issues that can ensue as a direct consequence of abuse such as childhood pregnancy, an interrupted education and isolation.

Although this story is filled with devastation and desolation, there is an undertone of strength, resilience and hope as Precious is able to come to a place where she recognizes she is not alone, that many others have similar stories to tell and that she can redefine her life by getting an education, becoming independent of her abusers, and taking charge of her future, despite the adversities she continues to face.

This is by no means a self help book or one with a fairytale ending. It is a provocative, and somewhat extreme account that screams “you are not alone” to anyone who has survived abuse and may feel that there experiences were unique; it gives new meaning to the term ‘survivor’ and illustrates just how complex and overarching abuse can be.
